Virranpussiin, also known as the electric catfish (*Malapterurus electricus*), is a species of catfish native to freshwater habitats across much of sub-Saharan Africa. It is renowned for its ability to generate and deliver electric shocks, earning it the nickname "electric catfish." This unique trait makes it one of the few fish capable of producing electricity, alongside species like the electric eel.

The electric catfish belongs to the family Malapteruridae and can grow up to 1.2 meters (4 feet) in length, though most specimens are smaller. Its body is elongated and covered in bony plates, giving it a somewhat armored appearance. The fish typically inhabits slow-moving rivers, lakes, and swamps, where it feeds on insects, crustaceans, and small fish. Its diet is supplemented by the use of weak electric fields, which it generates through specialized organs called electrocytes located along its tail.

The electric shocks produced by the virranpussiin serve multiple purposes. Primarily, they aid in detecting prey by creating an electric field that disrupts the movement of nearby organisms, making them easier to locate. Additionally, the shocks can be used defensively against predators or rivals. The voltage generated is not strong enough to harm humans but can cause a painful sting, often described as a sharp, electric-like sensation.

Due to its distinctive abilities and ecological role, the virranpussiin plays an important part in its ecosystem. However, it is not widely kept in aquariums outside of specialized facilities, as it requires large tanks and specific water conditions.
