Many positions require knowledge of biosafety and compliance with regulations, with facilities coded as BSL-2 or BSL-3 for work with pathogenic viruses. Virologists may work in academic departments, public health laboratories, national institutes, pharmaceutical companies, or startups.

The field has contributed to major public health advances, including vaccines and antiviral therapies, and it plays a central role in outbreak response and surveillance. Ethical considerations and dual-use concerns guide research priorities and disclosure, and international collaboration is common in studying globally distributed viruses.
