Violoncellista is the Italian term for a cellist, a musician who plays the violoncello. The cello is a bowed string instrument of the violin family, pitched between the viola and the double bass, typically held between the knees or resting on an endpin. The player uses a bow and left-hand fingers to produce a wide range of tones and dynamics.

Cellists perform as solo artists, chamber musicians, and as members of orchestras or as principal players. Professional training usually takes place at conservatories or music academies and emphasizes technique, music theory, ear training, and ensemble experience.
