Vinstförhållande, also referred to as a profit ratio, is a financial metric that expresses the relationship between a company's profit and another relevant financial figure, typically revenue, total assets, or equity. It is used to assess a company's profitability and efficiency in generating earnings relative to its size or sales. The most common vinstförhållande types include the gross profit margin, operating profit margin, and net profit margin, each calculated by dividing the corresponding profit by sales or by another base figure such as total assets.

The formula for the gross profit margin, a typical vinstförhållande, is as follows: (Gross Profit ÷ Net Sales) × 100%. This ratio for example indicates how much of each krona in sales is left after covering the cost of the goods sold. Operating profit margin, often used for more detailed analysis, is calculated as (Operating Profit ÷ Net Sales) × 100%, showing how much income remains after operating expenses. Net profit margin uses (Net Income ÷ Net Sales) × 100% and reflects the overall profitability after all costs, taxes, and interest are considered.
