Construction and operation typically involve a sighting mechanism, graduated circles or encoders for angle readings, and a leveling system to establish a reference plane. Modern devices rely on electronic encoders, digital displays, and data storage, improving accuracy, repeatability, and field efficiency. Calibration and maintenance include checking axes alignment, leveling, and verifying scale or encoder accuracy.
