Villiruusu is the Finnish name for several species of wild roses found in Finland. While the term can be applied broadly, it most commonly refers to Rosa rugosa, also known as the Japanese rose or beach rose, which has become naturalized in Finland. This hardy shrub is characterized by its deeply wrinkled, dark green leaves and its profuse, fragrant flowers, typically pink or white, that bloom from early summer to autumn. Following the flowers, it produces large, ornamental rose hips that are rich in Vitamin C.

Rosa rugosa is known for its exceptional resilience, tolerating saline conditions, poor soil, and harsh weather, making it well-suited to the Finnish climate. It often forms dense thickets, particularly along coastlines, dunes, and roadsides, where it was historically planted for erosion control and as an ornamental.
