Vihmametsadeks, or rainforests, are dense forests characterized by high amounts of rainfall throughout the year. These ecosystems are found in tropical and temperate regions, with tropical rainforests being the most well-known and diverse. Tropical rainforests are located near the equator and experience consistently warm temperatures and heavy precipitation, typically over 200 cm (79 inches) annually. Temperate rainforests, on the other hand, are found in cooler, mid-latitude coastal areas and receive significant rainfall, though temperatures are more variable.

The biodiversity of rainforests is astonishing. Tropical rainforests, in particular, are home to an estimated half of the world's plant and animal species, despite covering only a small percentage of the Earth's land surface. This rich diversity is supported by the stable, warm, and wet conditions that allow for a multitude of niches and complex ecological interactions. Layers are a defining feature of tropical rainforest structure, including the emergent layer, canopy, understory, and forest floor, each supporting unique flora and fauna.

Rainforests play a crucial role in global climate regulation. They absorb vast amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, acting as significant carbon sinks, and release oxygen through photosynthesis. The water cycle is also heavily influenced by rainforests, as they release large quantities of water vapor through transpiration, contributing to rainfall patterns both locally and globally. Deforestation, driven by agriculture, logging, and urbanization, poses a severe threat to these vital ecosystems, leading to habitat loss, species extinction, and exacerbating climate change. Conservation efforts are therefore essential to protect the invaluable biological and ecological services provided by rainforests.
