It is originally discovered in the Netherlands in a spoiled video recording, hence the name "videofailideni". The organism was initially associated with a specific type of decayed VHS tape, but it has since been identified in various environments.

Videofailideni is characterized by its unique growth pattern on rotting cellulose, specifically the adhesive backing of video tapes. It produces distinctive, wavy filaments that are purple-colored in the presence of microscopic chemicals. These organisms exhibit mycelial growth, followed by the formation of fungal fruiting bodies. The mycelium breaks down organic matter, decomposing the adhesive backing into simpler compounds.

Videofailideni is considered to be a saprotrophic organism, deriving nutrients from non-living organic matter. It plays a role in recycling the debris of VHS tapes, as it decomposes the adhesive sticking the tape to the hub. This recycling process illustrates its function within home media waste.
