Vibrasyon, also known as vibration, is a mechanical phenomenon whereby oscillations occur about an equilibrium point. The word comes from the Latin vibrō, meaning "I shake, I brandish". These oscillations can be periodic, such as the motion of a pendulum, or random, such as the noise originating from a wheel bearing.

A simple physical model of vibration is a mass attached to a spring. If the mass is displaced from its equilibrium position, it will experience a restoring force that pulls it back. This force causes the mass to accelerate and overshoot the equilibrium position, leading to oscillation. The frequency at which such a system oscillates is determined by its mass and stiffness. In more complex systems, multiple masses and springs can interact, leading to more complicated vibration patterns.

Vibrations are ubiquitous in nature and technology. They are essential for many natural phenomena, like the propagation of sound waves through the air or the seismic waves generated by earthquakes. In engineering, vibrations can be both beneficial and detrimental. For instance, they are used in vibratory feeders to sort and move small objects, in ultrasonic cleaning to remove contaminants, and in musical instruments to produce sound.

However, uncontrolled vibrations can lead to significant problems. They can cause fatigue and failure in structures like bridges and buildings, reduce the accuracy of sensitive equipment, and create discomfort or health issues for people exposed to them. Therefore, understanding, analyzing, and controlling vibration is a critical aspect of many engineering disciplines, including mechanical, civil, and aerospace engineering. Techniques like damping, isolation, and balancing are employed to mitigate unwanted vibrations.
