Vetykäyttöön refers to the use of hydrogen as a fuel or energy carrier. Hydrogen possesses a high energy density by weight, making it attractive for applications where weight is a critical factor, such as in transportation and aerospace. When hydrogen is combusted with oxygen, the primary byproduct is water, which is environmentally benign. This makes hydrogen a potentially clean energy source, especially if the hydrogen is produced through renewable methods.

The production of hydrogen can be achieved through several processes, including steam methane reforming, electrolysis of water, and biomass gasification. Steam methane reforming, while currently the most common method, relies on natural gas and produces carbon dioxide as a byproduct. Electrolysis, particularly when powered by renewable electricity, offers a pathway to "green hydrogen" with minimal emissions.

Hydrogen can be utilized in various ways. Fuel cells convert hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, heat, and water, offering an efficient and quiet power source. Hydrogen can also be combusted directly in engines, similar to conventional fuels, though this approach may have different emission profiles. Storage and transportation of hydrogen present significant challenges due to its low density at ambient temperatures and pressures, often requiring compression or liquefaction, which are energy-intensive processes. Despite these challenges, vetykäyttöön is being explored as a key component in decarbonization strategies for various sectors.
