Vetopelaajat are athletes who compete in the sport of tug-of-war, known in Finnish as vetopeli or vetopelaaminen. In a match, two teams pull on opposite ends of a rope, which has a marked center. The aim is to drag the rope so that a team’s side crosses a designated line or marker, typically by pulling the rope beyond a fixed boundary.

Competitive vetopelaaminen is governed internationally by the Tug of War International Federation (TWIF). Modern competitions commonly feature eight-person teams for men, with women’s and mixed categories and variations using four, six, or eight pullers in different events. A match ends when one team succeeds in moving the rope to the required distance or when a scoring interval ends. Rules emphasize grip, stance, and leg-driven power, while prohibiting illegal grips, wrapping the rope around the body, or false starts. Teams rely on synchronization and technique as much as raw strength.

The sport has ancient roots and has been practiced in many cultures. It gained formal organization in the 19th and 20th centuries and was part of the Olympic program from 1900 to 1920. Today TWIF coordinates world and continental championships, while national federations organize leagues and cups. In Finland, vetopelaajat compete in national events and regional leagues under TWIF rules, often within clubs focused on strength and teamwork.

Training for vetopelaajat emphasizes strength, endurance, grip, and technique. Common elements include rope-handling drills, leg drive, core stability, and coordinated anchoring and pulling positions. Success depends on consistent practice, strategic teamwork, and disciplined execution.
