Vesikulloosit refers to a rare group of inherited disorders affecting the kidney's collecting ducts. These conditions disrupt the normal reabsorption and secretion of water and electrolytes, leading to a number of characteristic symptoms. The primary issue lies in the kidney's inability to concentrate urine effectively, resulting in excessive urination (polyuria) and intense thirst (polydipsia).

There are several types of vesikulloosit, with the most common being autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). While both involve cysts in the kidneys, ARPKD typically presents in infancy or childhood with more severe renal and hepatic manifestations, whereas ADPKD often manifests in adulthood with a slower progression. Other forms of vesikulloosit can be caused by mutations in genes responsible for the function of aquaporin-2 water channels or vasopressin receptors, which are crucial for regulating water balance.

Symptoms can vary in severity but commonly include frequent urination, thirst, dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and impaired kidney function. In some cases, complications like kidney stones, urinary tract infections, and high blood pressure may also occur. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical evaluation, family history, laboratory tests to assess kidney function and electrolyte levels, and imaging studies such as ultrasound or CT scans. Management focuses on supportive care, managing symptoms, preventing dehydration, and addressing any associated complications. Treatment may include fluid intake regulation, medications to manage blood pressure and electrolyte imbalances, and in severe cases, dialysis or kidney transplantation.
