Vesikakso, also known as vesicular stomatitis, is a viral disease primarily affecting horses, cattle, and other cloven-hoofed animals, though it can occasionally infect humans. The illness is caused by vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), a member of the Rhabdoviridae family, which includes other notable viruses like rabies. The disease is characterized by the formation of fluid-filled blisters (vesicles) on the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, teats, and hooves of infected animals, leading to significant discomfort and reduced productivity.

Vesicular stomatitis is transmitted primarily through insect vectors, such as blackflies, sandflies, and mosquitoes, which carry the virus from infected animals to healthy ones. Direct contact with infected animals or contaminated materials, such as feed or equipment, can also spread the disease. The virus thrives in warm, humid climates, contributing to outbreaks during summer and early fall in affected regions, particularly in North and South America.

Symptoms in animals typically appear within three to eight days after exposure and include drooling, difficulty eating, lameness, and the formation of painful blisters. In severe cases, secondary bacterial infections may develop, exacerbating the condition. While vesikakso is rarely fatal, it can cause long-term damage to hooves and teeth, leading to chronic issues. Human infections are uncommon but may occur through direct contact with infected animals or contaminated bodily fluids, resulting in similar blister-like lesions on the skin or mucous membranes. Treatment for animals focuses on supportive care, such as pain management, proper nutrition, and maintaining hygiene to prevent secondary infections. There is no specific antiviral treatment for vesikakso, and vaccination is not widely available for livestock due to the virus’s rapid mutation.

Control measures emphasize vector management, such as insect repellents and habitat modification, as well as biosecurity practices to limit animal-to-animal transmission. Early reporting of suspected cases to veterinary authorities is crucial for containing outbreaks and preventing spread to other regions. The disease is distinct from other vesicular diseases, such as foot-and-mouth disease, but shares some clinical signs, necessitating differential diagnosis by veterinary professionals.
