Vesiglycolysis is a hypothetical metabolic pathway that has been proposed to occur in the urinary bladder. The concept suggests that cells within the bladder lining might utilize glycolysis, the breakdown of glucose into pyruvate, to generate energy. However, there is limited scientific evidence to support the widespread or significant operation of vesiglycolysis in healthy bladder tissue.

Glycolysis is a fundamental energy-producing process found in most living cells. It involves a series of enzymatic reactions that convert glucose into two molecules of pyruvate, with a net gain of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the cell's primary energy currency, and NADH. Pyruvate can then enter the mitochondria for further energy production through the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, or it can be converted to lactate under anaerobic conditions.

The theoretical basis for vesiglycolysis may stem from observations of metabolic activity in other epithelial tissues or in pathological bladder conditions where cellular stress or altered nutrient availability might necessitate alternative energy sources. For instance, tumors often exhibit altered metabolic profiles, and it's conceivable that malignant bladder cells might rely more heavily on glycolysis. However, research specifically delineating a distinct and functional vesiglycolysis pathway in normal bladder physiology remains scarce. Further investigation is required to confirm its existence and functional significance.
