The process typically begins with raw water intake from a source such as a river, lake, or groundwater. Initial screening removes large debris. Coagulation and flocculation steps involve adding chemicals that cause small suspended particles to clump together, forming larger flocs. These flocs are then removed through sedimentation, where they settle to the bottom. Filtration further removes smaller suspended particles using layers of sand, gravel, and sometimes charcoal.

Disinfection is a critical stage, employing methods like chlorination, ozonation, or ultraviolet (UV) light to kill or inactivate harmful microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses. In some cases, additional treatment steps like softening to reduce mineral content or aeration to remove dissolved gases might be implemented depending on the raw water quality and the intended use of the treated water.

Wastewater treatment plants, distinct from drinking water treatment plants, focus on cleaning water that has been used in homes, industries, and agriculture before it is discharged. They employ similar principles of physical, chemical, and biological processes to remove pollutants.
