Verzinkten is a German term meaning zinc-coated or galvanized. It describes steel or iron parts that have been treated with a zinc coating to improve corrosion resistance. The process and the resulting coating extend the service life of metal components used outdoors or in harsh environments.

The most common methods are hot-dip galvanizing and electrogalvanizing. In hot-dip galvanizing, the part is immersed in molten zinc, forming a zinc-iron alloy layer that adheres strongly to the base metal. Electrogalvanizing uses electroplating to deposit zinc, typically yielding thinner, more uniform coatings. A post-treatment process called galvannealing may be used to improve paint adhesion and hardness.

Zinc coatings protect by acting sacrificially: the zinc corrodes before the underlying steel, and even if the coating is damaged, nearby zinc still protects exposed areas. This results in considerable durability, low maintenance, and the possibility of long service lives in outdoor or corrosive environments. Coatings can be inspected for thickness and integrity, and damaged areas can be repaired with zinc-rich paints or re-galvanized if necessary.

Standards governing verzinkten products include EN 1461 and ISO 1461, which specify coating thickness ranges, appearance, and testing methods for hot-dip galvanized coatings on iron and steel. Applications span infrastructure, construction elements, fencing, water and sewer components, street furniture, automotive parts, and hardware.

Limitations include potential damage from mechanical impact or abrasion that removes the coating, and the need to consider environmental exposure when estimating lifespan. Overall, verzinkten components offer a cost-effective, durable solution for corrosion protection.
