A vertent is a specialized shelter design that incorporates vertical structural elements to create a distinct geometrical shape. The term is a portmanteau of “vertical” and “tent,” and is often used in the context of contemporary architecture and outdoor recreation. Vertents depart from traditional pitched‑roof tents by employing straight, inclined walls that converge to a central apex or mast. This configuration allows for a greater internal volume while maintaining a lower overall height, which can be advantageous in windy conditions or when a lower profile is desired.

The construction of a vertent typically uses a combination of tensile fabric, lightweight timber, or aluminum framing. The fabric panels are secured to the vertical frame by a series of tension cables, giving the structure a rigid yet flexible appearance. Because the walls are vertical rather than sloping, vertents can accommodate a central vertical column that serves as both a structural support and, in some designs, a skylight or ventilation shaft. This central column often incorporates LED lighting or skylights to provide natural illumination, enhancing the interior environment.

Vertents are used in a variety of settings. In the sporting arena, they serve as temporary bleachers or signage structures, offering fast installation and removal. In landscape architecture, they can form garden pergolas or shade structures that blend seamlessly with natural surroundings. Adventure travel companies sometimes employ vertents as minimalist campsites, where the vertical walls provide wind resistance and allow for efficient packing. In recent years, architects have begun to experiment with vertents in permanent building facades, using them as tensioned panels or as the basis for hybrid tensile–compression structures that achieve both visual impact and load‑bearing performance.
