Verslikken is the involuntary aspiration of foreign material into the airway, typically food or liquid, during the process of swallowing. This occurs when the epiglottis, a flap of cartilage at the base of the tongue, fails to close properly over the trachea (windpipe) during deglutition. Instead of being directed down the esophagus and into the stomach, the material enters the airway.

Symptoms of verslikken can range from mild to severe. Common signs include coughing, choking, gagging, a sensation of food or liquid stuck in the throat, and difficulty breathing. In more serious cases, it can lead to a complete airway obstruction, which is a medical emergency. Prolonged or frequent aspiration can also result in pneumonia, known as aspiration pneumonia, due to the introduction of bacteria into the lungs.

Several factors can increase the risk of verslikken. These include certain medical conditions affecting swallowing muscles and nerves, such as stroke, Parkinson's disease, or neurological disorders. Age is also a factor, as the swallowing mechanism can weaken with age. Eating or drinking too quickly, not chewing food thoroughly, or being distracted while eating can also contribute.

Management of verslikken involves addressing the immediate choking episode if it causes obstruction. For those with recurrent issues, medical evaluation is necessary to identify the underlying cause. Treatment may involve speech therapy to improve swallowing techniques, dietary modifications to make food and liquids easier to swallow, or, in some cases, medical interventions. Prevention strategies include mindful eating, proper positioning during meals, and addressing any underlying health concerns that affect swallowing.
