Verrokkiryhmä (Finnish for “control group”) is a group of study units in which the experimental intervention is not applied or is applied as standard practice, serving as a baseline for comparison with the treated group.

In experimental design, the verrokkiryhmä helps estimate the counterfactual outcome—the result that would have occurred without the intervention. When possible, participants are randomly assigned to the verrokkiryhmä or to the treatment group to reduce bias. Blinding may also be used to prevent expectations from influencing outcomes, with single- or double-blind procedures depending on the study.
