Verndarsvæði is an Icelandic term for protected areas—geographic zones designated to safeguard natural or cultural values. They are established to conserve biodiversity, landscapes, geological features, and cultural heritage, while allowing legitimate use and enjoyment of the land under controlled conditions.

Designations may cover various site types, including biodiversity hotspots, rare ecosystems, significant geological formations, and culturally important landscapes. Boundaries are defined by official maps, and some areas may have multiple overlapping protections or become part of larger networks such as national parks or nature reserves.

Legal basis and administration: In Iceland, protected areas operate under environmental protection laws administered by national and local authorities. Proposals for new verndarsvæði are prepared by government agencies, regional authorities, and take into account scientific assessment, landowner interests, and public consultation. A management plan specifies objectives, allowed activities, permitted concessions, and enforcement measures.
