Vermikompostimine, or vermicomposting, is a bioconversion process in which earthworms and associated microorganisms break down organic waste into vermicast, a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Conducted in a controlled bin or pile, it relies on the worm’s digestion and microbial activity to transform scraps into a stable, compost-like material.

The most common worms are red wigglers, Eisenia fetida and Eisenia andrei, chosen for their tolerance of high organic loads and moist conditions. They consume decaying plant matter, producing vermicast—castings that are rich in nutrients and beneficial microbes. Suitable inputs include fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, tea leaves, shredded paper, and yard waste; meat, dairy, fats, and large quantities of citrus are typically avoided because they can attract pests or inhibit worm activity.

Vermicomposting relies on maintaining appropriate moisture and temperature, typically about 60-80% moisture and 15-25°C (59-77°F). In a well-managed system, the result is vermicast, a dark, crumbly material used as a soil conditioner and slow-release fertilizer. Some systems also collect a liquid effluent, which may be used as a diluted fertilizer after careful handling.

Advantages include waste reduction, low energy input, and production of a valuable soil amendment. Limitations include sensitivity to overheating or dehydration, odor risk if poorly managed, and the need to separate finished castings from live worms. Regular monitoring and proper inputs are essential for a successful vermicomposting operation.

Vermikompostimine has applications in home gardening, urban farming, and education, and is a common component of sustainable waste management and soil improvement strategies.
