Verfspatten is a visual effect consisting of paint splatters or spatter patterns produced by rapid, irregular bursts of liquid color. The term is used in Dutch-speaking contexts to describe this specific look, but the phenomenon is recognized in broader art and design discourse as a decorative and expressive technique. Splatters can occur unintentionally through accidental drips, or deliberately as part of a composition to convey energy, motion, or texture.

Techniques range from direct flicking or dripping of paint onto a surface to controlled spraying, brushing, or spraying with air devices. Artists may vary paint viscosity, use primers, layering, and masking to create desired scales and densities. Protecting surrounding areas and using fixed supports helps manage overspray. Some practices involve a resist or masking fluid to preserve negative spaces or to exaggerate edge clarity.

Verfspatten appears across media, including canvas painting, mural work, illustration, textile design, and digital art where scanned splatters are incorporated as textures.
