vereringega
Vereringega is a monotypic genus of flowering shrubs first described by Brazilian botanist Claudia Pereira in 2015. The sole species, Vereringega carinata, is endemic to the karstic limestone formations of central Brazil, with known populations restricted to the vicinity of the municipality of Imbaú. The plant is characterized by glossy, ovate leaves up to 10 cm long, a deep purple inflorescence bearing a small number of showy flowers, and oblong berries that are consumed by local wildlife. In situ, Vereringega carinata thrives in shallow, calcareous soils under high humidity conditions provided by the region’s seasonal monsoon rains.
