Verenvuotohäiriö refers to a group of medical conditions characterized by an increased tendency to bleed. These disorders arise from problems in the blood's ability to clot properly, a process known as hemostasis. Hemostasis involves a complex cascade of events involving blood cells called platelets and various proteins called clotting factors. When this system is impaired, even minor injuries can lead to excessive or prolonged bleeding.

There are several types of verenvuotohäiriö, broadly categorized as inherited or acquired. Inherited bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia and von Willebrand disease, are present from birth and are usually caused by genetic mutations affecting specific clotting factors or platelet function.
