These include atrial fibrillation, a common heart rhythm disorder that increases the risk of stroke, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), conditions involving blood clots in the legs or lungs, and after certain surgeries or procedures to prevent clot formation. They can also be used in individuals with prosthetic heart valves to prevent clots from forming on the artificial valve.

The use of verenohennuslääkkeet requires careful monitoring, as they can increase the risk of bleeding. Patients taking these medications are advised to be aware of signs of bleeding, such as unusual bruising, nosebleeds, or blood in urine or stool, and to report them to their doctor immediately. The dosage and choice of medication are determined by a healthcare professional based on the individual's medical history, other medications, and risk factors.
