Verenhyytymä, also known as a blood clot, is a semi-solid mass of blood that forms when blood changes from a liquid to a gel-like state. This process, called coagulation or clotting, is a vital mechanism for preventing excessive bleeding when a blood vessel is injured. Platelets, a type of blood cell, aggregate at the site of injury and release factors that initiate a cascade of biochemical reactions. These reactions lead to the formation of fibrin, a protein that creates a meshwork, trapping blood cells and forming a clot.
