Ventilatiedependence refers to the physiological and psychological reliance on mechanical ventilation. Physiologically, it means the respiratory muscles have become so deconditioned or damaged that they can no longer adequately support breathing without assistance. This can occur after prolonged periods on a ventilator, during which the muscles do not have to work as hard. Over time, this reduced workload leads to atrophy and weakness, making it difficult to wean the patient off the machine. Psychologically, ventilatiedependence can stem from the patient's perception of needing the ventilator to breathe, leading to anxiety or panic when attempts are made to reduce or remove it. This can be exacerbated by the discomfort or fear associated with dyspnea.
