Ventilaatiopuutteita, or ventilation insufficiency, refers to a condition where the lungs are unable to adequately exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide. This can occur due to problems with the respiratory system itself, such as lung diseases, or due to issues with the muscles and nerves that control breathing. Symptoms can range from mild shortness of breath to severe respiratory distress.

Causes of ventilation insufficiency are varied. Obstructive lung diseases like COPD and asthma can narrow the airways, making it difficult to breathe. Restrictive lung diseases, such as pulmonary fibrosis, reduce lung capacity. Neuromuscular conditions, including ALS and myasthenia gravis, weaken the muscles responsible for breathing. Other contributing factors can include central nervous system disorders that affect the breathing control center in the brain, or severe chest trauma.

Diagnosis typically involves assessing breathing patterns, blood oxygen levels, and lung function tests. Imaging studies like chest X-rays or CT scans may also be used to identify underlying lung abnormalities. Treatment aims to improve gas exchange and address the root cause. This can include supplemental oxygen, mechanical ventilation, medications to open airways or reduce inflammation, and physical therapy to strengthen respiratory muscles. Early recognition and management are crucial to prevent serious complications.
