Unlike raster graphics, which are composed of a grid of pixels, vector graphics are resolution-independent. This means they can be scaled to any size without losing quality or becoming pixelated.

The fundamental building blocks of vector art are mathematical constructs like points, lines, and Bézier curves. These elements are defined by their position, color, stroke weight, and fill properties. Software applications used for vector design, such as Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, and CorelDRAW, allow users to create and edit these mathematical descriptions.

They are also typically smaller in file size compared to comparable raster images, especially for simple graphics.

Vector art is commonly saved in formats like SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics), AI (Adobe Illustrator), EPS (Encapsulated PostScript), and PDF (Portable Document Format). These formats preserve the vector data, allowing for easy editing and resizing. While vector graphics are excellent for clean lines and solid colors, they are less suited for complex photographic imagery, for which raster graphics are more appropriate.
