Veenhaiguse, often referred to as venous disease, is a broad term encompassing conditions that affect the veins. These blood vessels are responsible for returning deoxygenated blood from the body's tissues back to the heart. When veins malfunction, blood can pool, leading to a variety of symptoms and complications.

The most common form of veenihaigus is chronic venous insufficiency. This occurs when the valves within the veins, which normally prevent blood from flowing backward, become weakened or damaged. As a result, blood flows more slowly and can accumulate in the legs. Symptoms can include swelling, leg pain, heaviness, itching, and skin changes such as discoloration or ulcers.

Varicose veins are a visible manifestation of veenihaigus, characterized by enlarged, twisted, and often bulging veins, typically appearing on the legs. While sometimes cosmetic, they can also be associated with discomfort and other symptoms of venous insufficiency. Spider veins, a smaller, web-like pattern of visible blood vessels, are a milder form of venous disorder.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a more serious condition where a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs. This can cause pain, swelling, and redness. A DVT poses a significant risk if the clot dislodges and travels to the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism.

Risk factors for veenihaiguse include genetics, age, obesity, prolonged standing or sitting, pregnancy, and certain medical conditions. Treatment approaches vary depending on the specific condition and its severity, ranging from lifestyle modifications and compression therapy to minimally invasive procedures and surgery.
