Vedensementtisuhteen, commonly referred to in English as the water–cement ratio (W/C), is the ratio of the mass of water to the mass of cement in a concrete or mortar mix. In Finnish texts, the base term is vedensementtisuhde, while the genitive form vedensementtisuhteen appears in phrases such as vedensementtisuhteen vaikutus. This ratio is a central parameter in concrete technology because it governs the hydration process and the microstructure of the hardened cement paste.

A lower vedensementtisuhde yields a denser microstructure with higher compressive strength and lower permeability, improving durability. A higher ratio, by contrast, increases capillary porosity, which generally reduces strength and long-term durability but improves fresh-mcrete workability. The relationship between the ratio, strength, and durability is often described by Abrams' law: strength tends to rise as the W/C ratio decreases, provided adequate curing and proper mixing.

Workability and curing are also influenced by the vedensementtisuhteen value. Lower water content makes the fresh mix stiffer, so plasticizers or superplasticizers are commonly used to maintain workability without increasing the water content. Proper curing remains essential, particularly for low W/C mixes, to prevent premature drying and allow complete hydration.

In structural concretes, values roughly range from about 0.4 to 0.6, with lower values for high-strength or low-permeability requirements and higher values for easier placement.
