For example, a watch marked 30 meters or 3 ATM is generally considered splash-proof, suitable for everyday use but not for swimming or diving. A rating of 100 meters or 10 ATM typically means the watch can be worn while swimming and snorkeling. Higher ratings, like 200 meters or 20 ATM, are suitable for water sports and recreational diving.

It is important to note that these ratings are based on laboratory tests and do not guarantee water resistance in all real-world conditions. Factors such as temperature changes, chemical exposure, and wear and tear on seals can affect a product's actual water resistance. Manufacturers will often specify that water resistance is not a permanent condition and may decrease over time.

For electronic devices like smartphones, water resistance is often indicated by an IP rating, such as IP67 or IP68, according to the International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC) standards. The first digit in an IP rating indicates protection against solid objects (dust), and the second digit indicates protection against liquids (water). An IP67 rating, for instance, signifies dust tightness and protection against immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. An IP68 rating offers even greater protection, with specific depth and time limits usually defined by the manufacturer.
