Vattenfast is a Swedish term describing materials, coatings, or assemblies designed to prevent water from passing through under specified conditions. It denotes water resistance rather than absolute impermeability, and the level achieved depends on exposure duration, pressure, temperature, and the condition of the material and joints. In English, it is often translated as waterproof or water resistant depending on context.

Waterfastness is achieved through physical barriers, sealants, membranes, and water-repellent or waterproof coatings. In construction, waterfast layers are used in bathrooms and exterior walls; in electronics, sealed enclosures or potting compounds protect components; in textiles, waterproof fabrics and laminates prevent penetration while remaining flexible.

Testing and standards: Water resistance is commonly quantified with standardized tests and codes. IP ratings (Ingress Protection) are widely used in electronics to indicate water exposure tolerance, with higher digits implying greater protection. Other fields use tests such as hydrostatic head measurements, immersion tests, or water-contact resistance for coatings and fabrics.

Limitations and maintenance: Even certified waterfast materials can fail after long submersion, physical damage, or aging. Regular inspection, timely resealing, and re-coating help maintain waterfastness over time.

Applications: Buildings and bathrooms, exterior facades, boats and vehicles, electronic devices, and outdoor fabrics often rely on waterfast solutions to protect against moisture.
