The most important iron-bearing minerals are hematite (Fe2O3) and magnetite (Fe3O4); lesser amounts of goethite (FeO(OH)), limonite, and siderite (FeCO3) may also occur. The iron content, or Fe grade, of ore determines its processing requirements and economic viability.
Geology and deposits: Iron ore forms in a variety of settings. Hematite and magnetite ores are commonly
Mining and processing: Iron ore is typically mined by open-pit methods. The ore is crushed and ground
Uses and refining: Concentrates serve as the primary feedstock for steelmaking. In blast furnaces, iron oxides
Global context: Major producers include Australia and Brazil, with significant output also from China, India, Russia,
