Vastuskondensaattori, often translated as resistor-capacitor or RC circuit, is a fundamental electrical circuit composed of a resistor and a capacitor. These components can be connected in series or parallel, and their combination exhibits unique electrical properties.

In a series RC circuit, the resistor and capacitor are connected end-to-end. When a DC voltage is applied, the capacitor charges through the resistor. The rate of charging is determined by the time constant, a product of the resistance (R) and capacitance (C) values. This time constant, denoted by the Greek letter tau (τ), dictates how quickly the capacitor voltage reaches its final value. A larger time constant means slower charging. Similarly, when the voltage source is removed and the circuit is closed, the capacitor discharges through the resistor, again at a rate governed by the time constant.

In a parallel RC circuit, the resistor and capacitor are connected across the same two points. The behavior of a parallel RC circuit is more complex, but it also involves charging and discharging phenomena.

RC circuits are widely used in electronics. They are employed in timing circuits, filters (both low-pass and high-pass), oscillators, and signal processing applications. The ability of RC circuits to store and release electrical energy, and to control the rate of voltage changes, makes them indispensable building blocks in many electronic devices. Their simplicity and versatility contribute to their widespread use in both basic and advanced electronic designs.
