vastineekseen

Vastineekseen is a Finnish expression used to indicate that something is offered or presented in return, or as a response to something that has been said or done. The base noun vastine denotes a reply, counterargument, or counteroffer, and the suffix -ekseen is a derivational ending that marks the role or function something takes in a situation, roughly translating to “as” or “in the capacity of.” The construction is most common in formal written Finnish, including journalism, legal writing, and literary prose.

In usage, vastineekseen signals that what follows is given in reply to a previous statement, demand, or condition, and it can convey a counterproposal, clarification, or reciprocal action. It is typically found in sentences that set up a response or counterbalance to an earlier point. Because of its formal tone, it is less frequent in everyday spoken language, where other expressions such as vastineeksi or more everyday phrasing may be used instead.

Examples are: “Keskustelussa hän esitti vastineekseen lisätietoja.” (In the discussion, he presented additional information in response.) “Päätöksen vaikutuksia on tarkennettava vastineekseen uusilla simuloinneilla.” (The effects of the decision must be clarified as a countermeasure with new simulations.)
