Vastareaktioiden is a Finnish term used in sociology and political science to describe responses that arise to oppose or modify an initial action, policy, or event. In English, it is often translated as counter-reactions or backlashes. The concept covers spontaneous or organized responses aimed at limiting, reversing, or redirecting the original stimulus. They can occur in public, organizational, or online spaces and may be short-term responses or long-run social processes.

Causes include perceived threat to interests, identity, or status; perceived illegitimacy or poor legitimacy of the action; economic or practical costs; rapid social or political change; or misalignment between policy design and public values. Characteristics include that they can be driven by ordinary citizens, interest groups, or political actors; use of protests, lobbying, litigation, or media campaigns; amplification by social media; and often framed as defense of values or stability.

Outcomes vary: they may slow, modify, or reverse reforms; escalate polarization; or, in some cases, catalyze compromise or new policy designs. They can also contribute to policy gridlock if responses strengthen opposing sides without agreement.

Examples include backlashes against education or welfare reforms, environmental or immigration policies, or corporate regulatory changes; consumer backlash against product redesigns or brand changes.
