Varsaturi (often written as varsături without diacritics) refers to the act of vomiting, the involuntary expulsion of stomach contents through the mouth. In medical contexts the terms vomiting or emesis are used. It is a common symptom that can accompany many conditions and may be accompanied by nausea, retching, increased salivation, abdominal discomfort, and sometimes fever or diarrhea.

Causes are diverse and usually grouped by category. Common infectious causes include viral or bacterial gastroenteritis. Other frequent causes are pregnancy (hyperemesis gravidarum), medications or toxins, migraines, motion sickness, and food poisoning. Metabolic or endocrine disorders (such as diabetic ketoacidosis or adrenal crises) or neurological issues like raised intracranial pressure can also provoke vomiting. Less common causes include gastrointestinal obstruction and systemic illnesses.

Red flags that warrant urgent medical evaluation include vomiting of blood (hematemesis), vomiting with signs of dehydration or weight loss, persistent vomiting beyond 24–48 hours, an inability to keep fluids down, severe abdominal pain, fever with stiff neck or confusion, or a head injury. In children, poor intake, lethargy, or dehydration require prompt assessment.

Diagnosis is based on history and examination, with investigations guided by the suspected cause. Management aims to identify and treat the underlying condition, prevent dehydration, and alleviate symptoms. General measures include small, frequent sips of oral rehydration solutions, avoiding irritants, and using antiemetic medications when appropriate. Severe or persistent vomiting may require intravenous fluids, electrolyte correction, and specialized medical care.
