Varkaudella is the adessive form of the Finnish place name Varkaus. It marks location at or near the place in sentences that use the adessive case, one of Finnish’s locative endings. In everyday language, the standard way to say “in Varkaus” is Varkaudessa. Varkaudella is therefore more commonly encountered in dialectal speech, historical texts, or signage and written material where emphasis is placed on the locality as a geographical unit.

The use of the adessive -lla/-llä differs from the inessive -ssa/-ssä in that it often conveys a sense of location at a site or in relationship to a place, rather than simply being inside its boundaries. Consequently, Varkaudella may appear in phrases describing facilities, events, or activities located at or attributed to Varkaus, such as “Varkaudella sijaitsevat yritykset” (companies located at Varkaus) or in certain regional expressions.
