In computer graphics, it's a crucial step in rendering, helping to optimize the drawing process by not rendering objects that are hidden from the camera's perspective. This improves performance by reducing the computational load.

The core principle involves identifying occluders, which are objects that block the view of other objects (occludees). Various algorithms exist to perform shadow analysis efficiently. Early methods involved techniques like depth buffering, where the depth of each pixel is stored, and only objects closer to the viewer than what's already stored are rendered. More advanced techniques include hierarchical z-buffering and occlusion culling, which try to eliminate entire objects or groups of objects that are determined to be hidden before detailed rendering even begins.

In environmental science, shadow analysis can be used to model the amount of sunlight that reaches the ground or specific surfaces.
