Variation components, or variance components, are the parts of the total observed variability in a measurement that can be attributed to specific sources. In statistical modeling, they correspond to the variances of random effects and the residual error, and they quantify how much each source contributes to overall dispersion.

In analysis of variance and related models, the total variance is partitioned into components such as between-group variance, within-group variance, and, in more complex designs, interaction components. In linear mixed models, variance components refer to the variance of random effects (for example, random intercepts or random slopes) and the residual variance. Across disciplines, variance components are used to separate influences such as genetic versus environmental factors, or systematic versus random measurement error, to understand how much each source drives observed differences.

Estimation of variance components is typically performed with restricted maximum likelihood (REML) or maximum likelihood (ML) methods, often within mixed-model frameworks. Bayesian approaches also provide posterior distributions for variance components. The estimated components support interpretation of reliability and consistency, inform hypotheses about sources of variation, and guide experimental design through power and sample-size considerations.

Applications of variance components appear in fields such as genetics, psychology, agriculture, and engineering. They underpin heritability estimates, reliability measures like intraclass correlation, and the planning of experiments to balance or minimize unwanted sources of variation. Limitations include potential identifiability issues when sources are highly correlated, model misspecification, and sensitivity to sample size and design.
