Varajuuria is a Finnish term that translates to "shadow root" or "hidden root" and is primarily used in the context of forestry and silviculture. It refers to the secondary root system that develops from the stem of a tree, typically above the main root collar, when the primary root system is compromised or unhealthy. This can occur due to various factors such as waterlogging, soil compaction, or mechanical damage to the root collar.

When the main roots are unable to adequately supply water and nutrients to the tree, the stem may initiate the growth of adventitious roots. These varajuuria grow downwards from the trunk and can eventually reach the soil, forming a new, albeit often less extensive, root system. This adaptation allows the tree to survive and potentially recover, especially in challenging environmental conditions.

The presence of varajuuria can be an indicator of stress or past damage to a tree. Foresters may observe their development as a sign that the tree is struggling with its existing root system. While varajuuria can provide a temporary lifeline, they do not always compensate fully for the loss of a healthy primary root system.
