Vannledningens refers to the main water supply pipeline in a drinking-water system. It transports treated water from a treatment facility or reservoir into the distribution network that serves homes, businesses and institutions. As the principal conduit in the public water supply, its capacity, pressure, and reliability are central to service delivery and water quality management.

Water mains are designed to provide adequate flow and pressure for varying demand, maintain residual disinfectant levels across the network, and allow isolation for maintenance or emergencies. The network typically includes feeder mains, distribution mains, and service connections to individual properties, with valves and hydrants to control flow and permit isolations.

Common materials include ductile iron, PVC, and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Diameters vary widely, from small service lines to large transmission mains, typically from about 100 mm up to 1,200 mm or more for major arteries. Pressure ratings depend on the system, often ranging from about 3 to 10 bars.

Installation occurs underground, below frost depth in cold climates. Buried depths are influenced by soil conditions, weather, and protection from freezing. Construction may involve open trenches or trenchless methods for crossings. Regular maintenance includes leak detection, flushing, valve or hydrant servicing, and monitoring of system performance.

Water mains are operated under regulatory standards governing water quality, pressure, and safety. Authorities monitor residual chlorine, turbidity, and microbial indicators, and utilities perform audits and testing to ensure compliance. Aging infrastructure, leaks, and pipe bursts pose ongoing challenges, as do shifting demand patterns and climate-related stresses.
