Vannkverner, often translated as water mills, are structures that harness the kinetic energy of flowing or falling water to perform mechanical work. Historically, they have been a crucial technology for various industrial and agricultural processes. The fundamental principle involves a water wheel, which is rotated by the force of water. This rotation is then transferred via a system of gears and shafts to power machinery.

There are several common types of water wheels. Overshot wheels are driven by water flowing over the top, offering high efficiency. Undershot wheels are powered by the water current flowing beneath them, simpler but less efficient. Breastshot wheels are a compromise, with water hitting the wheel roughly at its midpoint. The specific design of the water wheel and the mill is often dictated by the local topography and water source.

Vannkverner have been used for a wide array of purposes. The most common application was for grinding grain into flour, hence the term "gristmill." They were also employed in sawmills to power saws, in fulling mills for textile production, and in forges to operate bellows and hammers. In some regions, they were even used for irrigation or to generate early forms of electricity. The decline of the vannkvern as a primary power source began with the advent of steam power and later, electricity. Despite their diminished role, many historic vannkverner stand as testaments to early engineering ingenuity.
