A vannkraftnettverk is a network of interconnected hydropower stations, storage reservoirs, and transmission infrastructure that supplies electricity generated from water flow. The network is designed to optimise the use of water resources across multiple sites, allowing water released from one reservoir to be captured downstream for further power generation. This cascading arrangement increases overall efficiency and reliability, especially in regions with extensive river systems.

Key components of a vannkraftnettverk include dams or diversion structures, turbines and generators, penstocks or canals, and high‑voltage transmission lines. The control system manages water releases, turbine operation, and grid connectivity, often employing real‑time monitoring and automated fault detection. Modern systems also incorporate rapid‑response turbines and hybrid storage options such as pumped‑storage plants, which store excess energy by pumping water uphill during low demand periods and release it during peak demand.

Hydropower networks are significant contributors to Norway’s electricity supply, providing about 90 percent of the country’s renewable energy and more than 40 percent of its total generation. They support grid stability through load balancing and frequency regulation, owing to the fast ramp‑up capabilities of hydro turbines. However, environmental concerns, such as impacts on river ecosystems, fish migration, and sediment transport, have prompted the development of fish ladders, environmental flow requirements, and sediment management strategies. Balancing energy needs with ecological preservation remains a central challenge for the continued expansion and operation of vannkraftnettverk.
