The word derives from the concept of being at the head of a group or advance, and in Portuguese it is commonly linked to arts, culture, and intellectual life. The term is a calque of the French avant-garde, adapting the sense of pursuing new forms and ideas.

In arts and culture, vanguarda refers to works or groups that push boundaries in form, technique, or subject matter. It is used to describe movements, currents, or tendencies that challenge traditional norms and seek to redefine aesthetic or conceptual possibilities.
