These phenomena are essential in coastal engineering, where understanding wave behavior helps in designing breakwaters, seawalls, and other structures to mitigate erosion and flooding.

In addition to their natural occurrence, vandbølger are harnessed for renewable energy through wave power technologies, such as oscillating water columns and point absorbers, which convert wave motion into electricity. The study of vandbølger also contributes to climate research, as ocean waves influence heat and gas exchange between the atmosphere and the sea.
