A vandblødgøringsmiddel, often translated as water softener, is a device or chemical used to reduce the mineral content of hard water. Hard water typically contains high concentrations of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium ions. These minerals can cause various problems, including scale buildup in pipes and appliances, reduced effectiveness of soaps and detergents, and dry skin and hair.

The most common type of household water softener operates on the principle of ion exchange. It contains a tank filled with resin beads that are coated with sodium ions. As hard water passes through the resin bed, the calcium and magnesium ions are attracted to the resin and displace the sodium ions, which are released into the water. This process effectively removes the hardness minerals. Periodically, the resin needs to be regenerated. This is achieved by flushing the resin with a concentrated brine solution (saltwater). The high concentration of sodium ions in the brine forces the calcium and magnesium ions off the resin beads and into a drain, restoring the resin's ability to soften water.

Other methods for water softening exist, such as distillation, reverse osmosis, and chelation. Distillation involves boiling water and collecting the condensed steam, leaving the minerals behind. Reverse osmosis uses a semipermeable membrane to filter out minerals. Chelation uses chemicals that bind to mineral ions, preventing them from precipitating out of the water. The choice of water softening method depends on factors such as the level of hardness, cost, and desired outcome.
