Valuuttakauppa, also known as foreign exchange trading or forex trading, refers to the buying and selling of currencies. It is the largest and most liquid financial market in the world, with trillions of dollars traded daily. The primary purpose of currency exchange is to facilitate international trade and investment. Companies often need to convert their domestic currency into a foreign currency to pay for imports or receive payments for exports.

The forex market operates over the counter, meaning there is no central exchange or physical location. Trading occurs electronically between banks, institutions, and individual traders across the globe. Currencies are traded in pairs, such as EUR/USD (Euro against US Dollar) or GBP/JPY (British Pound against Japanese Yen). The first currency in a pair is called the base currency, and the second is the quote currency. The exchange rate indicates how much of the quote currency is needed to buy one unit of the base currency.

The value of a currency can fluctuate due to various factors, including economic indicators, political events, interest rate decisions by central banks, and market sentiment. Speculators participate in the forex market aiming to profit from these price movements by predicting which currency will appreciate or depreciate against another. While forex trading can offer significant profit potential, it also carries substantial risk due to leverage and volatility, making it unsuitable for all investors.
