Valoallergic is a term used to describe a hypersensitivity or adverse reaction to light. This condition is not a true allergy in the immunological sense, as it does not involve the typical IgE antibody response. Instead, it encompasses a range of conditions where exposure to light, particularly sunlight, triggers uncomfortable or harmful symptoms.

The most common manifestation of valoallergic reactions is phototoxicity, which is a drug-induced or chemical-induced photosensitivity. Certain medications, when taken orally or applied topically, can make the skin more susceptible to damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Upon exposure to sunlight, these individuals may develop exaggerated sunburn-like reactions, redness, itching, or blistering. Photosensitizing agents can include antibiotics, diuretics, retinoids, and even some plant compounds.

Another category is photoallergy, which is a rare, true allergic reaction mediated by the immune system. In this case, a substance, often a topical medication or fragrance, combines with UV light to form an allergen. The immune system then recognizes this altered substance as foreign and mounts an allergic response, leading to a delayed eczematous rash that can spread beyond the sun-exposed areas.

Symptoms of valoallergic reactions can vary in severity and presentation. They typically appear on sun-exposed skin and can include redness, itching, burning, swelling, and blistering. In some cases, systemic symptoms like fever or malaise may occur. Diagnosis usually involves a thorough medical history, a physical examination, and sometimes phototesting, where the skin is exposed to specific wavelengths of light to identify the trigger. Management focuses on avoiding light exposure, discontinuing offending medications or products, and treating the symptoms with topical corticosteroids or emollients.
